Back to nature
With a frenzy of acid colours, fluros and blindingly bright prints around, I have fallen in love with nature’s own colour palate. Walking along my local beach I can see a myriad of shades that I want to dress in: the soft grey of wet sand, the white of the sea foam, the peachy pink of a shell, black and white feathers from a lonesome seagull… Ah, a simple stroll on the sand makes me want to transform my wardrobe into a homage to the great outdoors. And it’s not only earthy tones that have got me excited, it’s also the rich textures and natural fibers; like a suede and feather necklace and with an organic cotton dress. I feel like I might be going through a slight ‘hippy’ stage, but this summer I am all about Mother Earth’s sense of colour and style.
Of course to juxtapose all this muted and soft colours, I love a splash of garishly bold colour thrown in – like a comfy slouch dress and leather sandals with a fluro pink cotton scarf. It’s all about the sweet, gooey, fashionable spot between natural and man-made. It’s also a very understated look – don’t crowd an outfit with too many ideas or accessories. The beauty is in the simplicity.
I recently met up for brunch with a group of girlfriends and was rocking the au naturel earthy tones look. My friends couldn’t put their finger on what was different. “Your skin is glowing!” “You look younger or something!”. After much blushing on my part, we decided this fuss free look was the cause of my new sparkle. It’s amazing how a clean and natural outfit can highlight your best attributes.
So here are my favourite looks inspired by the elements…
The perfect T-shirt
I used to grab cheap T-shirts from any old store, but since discovering how amazing an organic cotton high quality T-shirt can feel, I won’t buy anything else. Bassike are my all time favourite T-shirt creators – they are always comfortable, flattering and seem to sit on you in the most perfect way. A simple T-shirt like this with a white skirt would be a perfect summer outfit.
The simple ensemble
How I love Kate Bosworth’s style. She pulls it all together in such an effortless and natural way that I instantly covet whatever I see her in. This outfit is very simple and all in colours you could find on a beach in winter. 10/10 for this (and the guy isn’t too bad either!).
Feather and leather
I’m not suggested everyone go and get dream catchers to wear as necklaces, but I have fallen for these cute tribal pouches. You could wear the simplest outfit – jeans and a white singlet – and throw on one of these cute necklaces and I guarantee it will be compliment city.
Isabel Lucas
Isabel Lucas is the poster girl for the natural look. Not only does she care deeply about the preservation of nature and wildlife, but she knows how to put an outfit together worthy of an earth goddess! She loves a soft palate of natural hues and never overcrowds an ensemble, letting her skin and striking features take centre stage. Flowy and free
This top is amazing! I love the loose fit and length, it’s the perfect starting point for your new natural look. The pattern is so subtle and only needs a simple pair of shorts or skirt to make it pop. This gorgeous number is from Birds of a Feather and is ON SALE at incityfashion.com.au!
