KYSSY: Keep Your Style Simple and YOU!
In a time when you can buy the latest accessory for as little as $2.00 from stores like Diva or Equip and there is a little website called ebay at which we can obtain and dispose of any impulse trend item within a week, it’s easy to become a little OTT with fashion accessories. I am a little hooked on the rush of skipping into a chain store and picking up a little piece to add to an already overcrowded outfit. I also recently noticed my friends and I had developed a copycat pattern recently. After we have done the hugs and kisses, we would step back and admire each others outfits and then pick what we would ‘borrow’ from their style. The conversation would go something like this:
“Ooo I love that ring…. Sportsgirl?”
“Diva. I love that bag! Country Road?”
“Witchery. Can I get that ring too?”
“Yep… does Witchery still have that bag? I’ll get it too if they do…”
So it basically becomes a switcheroo of style and a trade of trendy pieces. Every time I go into a store they seem to have increased their accessories department and made it easier to have load up your arms, ears, fingers, necks or heads with the latest ‘it’ piece that will be discarded next week. It can all just get a bit mundane and takes the magic out of wanting that special thing… the thrill of finding something really unique that you know you will love for years to come. I want to stop my addiction to quick fashion fixes and get back to what what made me love fashion in the first place – it’s creativity.
When talking about keeping an outfit simple and individual, usually there is a quote from the queen of fashion, Coco Chanel; “Before you head out the door, take one thing off.” Which I completely agree with. But I found a quote from Coco that I like even better:..
“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.”
Here are some ways of reducing the outfit clutter and revealing your true style:
Wipe off the bronze
I know we all like a little bit of colour in summer, but embracing your pale skin takes courage and reveals your true beauty. Haley Williams has always rocked her porcelain complexion, complimenting it with her red hair and lots of black. I love the simplicity of her look. While I almost want to take a hose to Christina Aguilera. She is a beautiful girl and doesn’t need to cover it all up with make up. Keep it pure and pretty, people!
Signature something
Okay, so we can’t all pull off red lips, but if you have something that is unique to you, embrace it! Don’t worry about it going out of style. A dear friend of mine has worn the same perfume for 5 years and it still smells just as amazing. If it ain’t broke…
No more impulse accessories
This is a tough one. How can you tell if something is an impulse purchase or if you really, really love it instantly? Well, I think you have to do the ‘walk away’ test and think if you have something like it at home. You don’t have to have every single little new style of bracelet that appears in magazines, stick with things you really love. Full stop.
Online love
Online shopping is truly amazing. You can see something you like, think about it, come back to it, email it to your friends for feedback and if it’s a good site (like ICF!) you will have it the next day! The delayed gratification helps you appreciate the piece more. Go to incityfashion.com.au and get shopping! This cutie (pictured) is from Milk and Honey.
If it doesn’t suit you, don’t push it!
Oh dear. I am not sure what was going on here, but Lindsay is having a bad case of doesn’t-suit-you-and-it-looks-silly-itis. Just like knowing what looks good on you, it’s good to know what you can’t pull off.
