Searching for Sunglasses
I lost my sunglasses about three weeks ago and was having an inner battle about whether to get new ones or live in desperate hope of the old pair turning up. I have suffered in silence so far, but can’t go on this way. It might be paranoia but I believe I am getting new lines around my eyes from squinting. So the jury is well and truly in: time for new shades.
The eyes draw so much attention that what you cover them with is a big deal. So far I have been quite boring with my choice if sunglass styles; I look at what my favourite celebs are wearing and find a less expensive version. Nicole Richie, Lauren Conrad, The Olsens, Jessica Alba and Sienna Miller are reliable for sporting the latest eyewear trends, so copying them is pretty fail proof. But this time I want to find some more unique shades. I have decided to find something quirky, designer and fabulous. After all, if I invest more money in them, surely I won’t lose them as easily? Right? Well, that’s what I am hoping for anyway.
I have a friend who can wear any type of sunglasses. She whips on the silliest pair she can find and still looks as fashionable as an Victoria Beckham (but happier). For those not blessed with facial features capable of carry infinite shade possibilities, there are a couple of styles that will suit almost all face shapes. The original Ray Ban shape is a blessing for those with round faces and the aviator style will fair well on those with a longer face. I always make sure I have a trusted friend with me to help me find a pair that suits. Otherwise I am prone to hallucinations of having perfect-face-for-sunglasses-ism.
So beginning my quest for the ultimate sunglasses, I have pulled up the latest and greatest on all things eyewear…
Colour changing frames
The latest from Le Specs take the prize for most innovative. Using lenticular colour-changing technology, the new Revolver range of sunglasses change colour when rotated from side to side. So it’s like two pairs of sunnies for the price of one! And quite a nifty price at $49.95. They come in three colours: Peacock (Violet to Turquoise) Sunset (Peach to Pink and Iron (Charcoal to Black).
Zipper frames
Can Alexander Wang do no wrong? Not only did he give us the hippest bowling bag in the history of fashion, but he has teamed up with Linda Farrow to create these bad boys. I love this quirky spin on a classic frame shape.
The new ‘classic’
These Prada frames have a slightly butterfly-ish shape to them and I think they are the new oversized IT sunnies. These are perfect if you want to have a ‘Hollywood’ moment or just want a subtle update.
Seventies Robo
When I saw these Chloe frames I didn’t know whether to boogie down or rent the eighties classic film Judge Dread. I might settle for dancing the robot. So modern and so cool, I can practically see all the starlets that will be wearing these any moment now.
Designer vs Designer
Graz and Ellery? Yes please. These two got together and created something fabulous. This range was launched early 2010 and is limited edition so if you are after something unique, hunt down a pair. I love the heavy cat-eye look of these frames. Very chic.
Eyewear labels on my radar: Alexander Wang, Le Specs, Flint, Chloe, Graz, Sportsgirl, Cheap Monday, Morrissey, Prada, Fiorelli, AM Eyewear, Tom Ford, Ksubi, Karen Walker, Oroton, Ray Ban.
