Summer style for guys
In Australia, we are a casual bunch. We love our fashion but ease and comfort are probably the number one priority for our wardrobe. This even more true for men. Especially in summer, when guys can go weeks wearing pretty much the same thing day in and day out.
I love finding out how Aussies are perceived from beyond our shores and having recently been overseas, I quizzed some New Yorker friends on our bloke’s style. A friend of mine commented that when an Australian man comes to New York, he arrives looking practical and ready for an adventure – but usually lacking a sense of style. She said that when an Australian man leaves New York, his suitcase is stuffed with cashmere scarves, well tailored shirts, stylish blazers and a new interest in fashion. Like a butterfly, Australian men shed their comfortable trackies and emerge proud and well dressed.
A new city can give men the freedom to dress differently. Maybe it’s because men don’t like to look like they make too much effort with their outfits; fearing the ribbing they might get from mates if they show up to a BBQ in anything other than shorts, T-shirt and thongs. It gives them the chance to try new clothes and go for a more sophisticated look.
Everyone likes to feel stylish. So here are some tips for guys who want to amp up their wardrobe and look a bit more ‘stand out’ this summer…
Know your fabrics
Jude Law is one of the best dressed in the business. He gravitates towards neutral colours but makes a statement with feature pieces and little details. The grey T-shirt he is wearing would look great on any man this summer. Look for a light cotton blend with a deeper neckline. Very sexy.
Respect the shirt
Arguably the coolest man in the world, Jay Z is a perfect example of the cruise/resort look. This is a bit more formal than beachwear. If you have a day at the beach planned and want to stand out, try wearing a white shirt with your boardies. Not only will you look like you have a yacht moored around the corner but it will protect you from the sun! Smart and suave.
Befriend a hat
Orlando Bloom is now an honorary Aussie, having married one of our most beautiful stars, Miranda Kerr. I have always loved Orlando’s style. He always has something interesting going on with his outfit but doesn’t look like he’s trying too hard. This summer, why not find your perfect hat? Spend a while trying them on (markets or department stores usually have a good range) and get the one that looks the best on you, not the one which is in fashion right this second. You will have an instant signature look for the summer.
Love your loafers
In summer most guys only put on closed toe when required to by a pub’s dress code, but a nice pair of loafers/boat shoes should be worn with pride! They are flattering for skinny legs, hide scuffed summer feet and will give you instant style.
Check your shorts
Love him or hate him, John Mayer dresses well. I have always loved checked shorts on guys – it’s a little bit preppy and juxtaposes other casual beachwear, like singlets and plain T-shirts. Here is a tip for finding your perfect summer shorts: go shopping with a girl – a guy friend will most likely feel uncomfortable staring at you in shorts for too long.
