Winter is here! Almost…
It’s the turn of the season and I am SO excited.
Just when we have reached breaking point with humidity and all the hair frizz it induces, a cool change descends and we find ourselves reaching for woolly blankets when relaxing on the couch. This is when I start to daydream of leather jackets, tailored blazers, skinny jeans, scarves, beanies and all the cosy goodness that goes with my beloved winter.
I appreciate the long evenings, the social calendar, barbeques and breezy fashions of summer – but my heart belongs to the layered, cashmere fashion trends of the chilly months and I am loving the first glimpses of what will hit the stores any minute now. Of course, due the earths axis and rotation the seasonal trends of each hemisphere are annoyingly out of whack, so we can’t look to our global counterparts for immediate inspiration. The flip side of this is most online stores based in Europe or the US are doing their winter stock sales, just when we are starting to rug up!
So buy a cute umbrella, put your electric blanket on your bed and pop a couple of vitamin C to ward off any flu nasties – winter is on the way!
Here are my top five winter must-haves for this year.
Thigh high boots
Even the combination of the words ‘Thigh high boots’ sounds naughty. But this season, think more military meets Anna Karina. With a large dose of sugar. To make this look work for you (and not be asked how much you charge for the hour) team with floaty floral print or cream dresses and girly mini shirts.
The new knit
This season, knit has taken on a life of it’s own. Go chunky, go tight, just make sure it’s a standout cut. Long knitted vests and chunky cardigan knits will be all the rage, as well as vibrant, look at me colours. I am dreaming of a thick knit, fire engine red scarf teamed with a cream dress and leather jacket. Winter perfection.
Sheer
This may sound odd, but sheer fabric will be EVERYWHERE this winter. It may be tempting to rug up for a night on the town, but a black sheer layer with a well structured slip underneath will exude an original sexiness. Wear this with a trench coat and big hair – very mod sixties.
Double Denim
I never thought I would see this trend again! But to my surprise and delight, a fashion faux pas has become one of the hottest looks for the cooler months. It’s a little bit boho mixed with seventies country. Go for a light denim shirt with dark denim jeans and as many tasseled brown leather accessories you can find.
Scarves
Everyone who meets me (or gets within a 10 metres of me) will notice I have a bordering on manic obsession with scarves. It can be 32 degrees outside and I will still have some light cotton cloth wrapped nonchalantly around my neck. So when the forecast is in the teens I am in heaven. This season go for big, bulky scarves in rose and peach hues or red and blacked checked for a rock and roll edge.
